Yeah. It seems pretty standard to hold internal staff to an extremely high bar to reach a title but simultaneously hire total unknown outside candidates into the same title without a second thought ... and then wonder how you could possibly have retention problems.
I don't want to take away from this message at all, but the only promotion I've had in my 17 years was a relunctant one, to correct a demotion I took when joining a company. Really annoying.
I don’t think it takes away from the gender disparity angle. I’ve gotten one significant raise in 20 years and both Amy’s were well under market. But as a white male, it’s easier to find employment, negotiate that raise, and be taken seriously. Similar narrative; more privilege.
I’ve long held the suspicion while working in tech that “Working in Tech” is actually really shitty. I think all the toys and fake perks are actually a huge red flag to cover up for all the nastiy pettiness and white nerd resentment. No I don’t want to play fucking foosball chad.
