the Derg. In 1987 Fetanu spent a year and several months in prison at the torture prison known as Gehennab. During the TPLF occupation of the region members of the Welkait-Tegede community were imprisoned, tortured or murdered because of their ethnicity.

“Why were you listening to Amharic music?” This was the crime committed by an Amhara man in Welkait, killed just a couple of yrs ago, prior to TPLF leaving Gonder. The killers said “There is a donkey over there, that you should clean up” referring to the Amhara victim.
