it remains deeply weird that, in response to police unwillingness to use existing powers against a threat its sympathetic to, the policy response has been to give police more power to use against people they don't like

Thinking about this as response to Jan 6. All the information needed to anticipate the capitol attack was available & in the open source; police forces were just not deployed to do so. I suppose "weird" here holds if we assume police exist subservient to civilian government; it's a fairly expected sequence of events if instead we see civilian government as mostly an apparatus that exists to support police
