I just had a basic science NIH proposal withdrawn by CSR, three wks before study section, because they decided it's a clinical trial, even though the definition and a case study says it isn't. So if you're hoping to submit as a non-clinical-trial, you may want to reconsider. 1/2

My 10 year old brother just called and told me he found a pattern in the primes. Take any prime, 2p+1 will be prime (2->5->11->23->47). Upon making him do the next step he realized this didn't work. Any advice on how to stoke this interest?

The neural compass is currently enjoying something of a renaissance! If you don't want to lag behind then check out this bunch of new head-direction system reviews that came out in the last few weeks (links in the thread):

Out today, "Ventromedial prefrontal cortex compression during concept learning" w . vmPFC compresses information during learning in a goal-directed manner. Its timecourse is unique and parallels attention weights from learning models.

New preprint, "Levels of Biological Plausibility", covering how understanding of mechanism, reduction, and emergence are tied to levels, as well as how biological plausibility is an incoherent concept under a levels of mechanism view.

New from the awesome . Behaviour and modelling. Humans can extract the structure of graphs and generalise it to new situations. This allows them to guess links they have never seen, and to choose good policies for efficiently navigating the graphs.

We have Google's answer: They refuse to be held accountable. It's pretty fucked up how they're timing this retaliation against organizers right before Thanksgiving, which could easily lead to it being buried in the news cycle. Don't let them get away with that; RT!

A paper provides the first evidence that individual neurons in the human brain target specific memories during recall. The results show one way in which the cognitive map shifts according to memory demands.
