Not to mention all the potential civilizations in the area getting roasted... :-)

Yup. 'If' (big if) Betelgeuse goes supernova this week, it would be reminiscent of Clarke's short story, 'The Star,' with nearby civilizations getting wiped out all so we could have a pretty Xmas star.

As a mental exercise, what would Orion look like post-nova? I’m curious. Another large nebula where BG was? Nothing there at all?
-
BG’s supernova would be extremely bright (as bright as full moon or brighter) for first few weeks/months. Then it would taper off and leave a shell of expanding nebulosity around it. This video has a good visualization:https://youtu.be/koBixkdE268

The most mind bending thing is that we are wondering if Betelgeuse went Supernova in 1377...

Just to clarrify my understanding of this, am I right in thinking that if it did explode "this week", the reality is it hasn't been there for 430 years?
-
Since Betelgeuse is ~700 ly away, we (astronomers) wouldn't know whether or not it has exploded for ~700 years, only after that point could one say it has exploded with certainty

What would the visuals be like when it’s in full swing, would we be able to see it without binoculars etc?
-
Yes, it would probably be visible in the daytime sky.
