SpaceX also noted they could adjust the orbits of the satellites for sensitive ground-based observations. Not sure what would warrant that.

I'm no expert, but from a radio astronomy perspective the main issues are a) the radio transmission frequencies the satellites will use for communication potentially spilling into protected bands, and b) reflections from Earth of low-frequency radio waves.
-
Not sure if painting the satellites black will mitigate either of those.

I am very skeptical and this huge number of Starlink satellites worries me a lot. The main problem is probably the solar panel.

Bullshit. Look at the geometry of their sats. They're "L" shaped with the long part being the Solar panel. We only see the illuminated side of the sat, so if they orient the sat to illuminate the Solar panel, we only see the Solar panel. They can't paint that black!

Yeah that seems to be a glaring issue with this idea.

Not an astronomer but what you end up with is streaks of blacked out sky, so you're still getting it blocked from your telescopes etc
-
I imagine the non-reflecting footprint would be too small to cause this.

I mean aren’t the solar panels what actually reflect the sun light? If spacex blackened some part of the satellite, for sure its reduce the light reflection. However not sure the effect level of it.

I would hope they've done real modeling as to what the main sources of light are. Obviously doesn't help with the specular reflection off the solar panel, but if the panel is perpendicular to sunlight that shouldn't be very visible on the ground.

So I could imagine this could help but it'd be nice to know it's driven by ray tracing and optics rather than general hopeful thinking.
