SpaceX knows their satellite is cheap and just a test bed. ESA's not so much so they are the ones that needed to move. A game of space based chicken.
Why highlight the story on who bears the responsibility of moving out of the way. The real story here, from what I see, is there isn’t some type of formal registration process for all those involved with their devices & LEO.
That's covered extensively in the article. But with SpaceX planning to launch 12,000 satellites, and touting their avoidance ability, I think this is worthy of highlighting.
This would be an act of aggression if it were country-to-country, no? Can this satellite be ... ahem... removed?
Not an act of aggression, just a stark reminder that our current rules and guidelines are inadequate to deal with the thousands of impending mega constellation satellites in orbit.

Thanks for all that info! On the one hand, this reaffirms that we need binding international rules, a space traffic law. OTOH, I‘m wondering if it’s really a good idea for SpaceX to have set this kind of precedent.
