Two images of the host galaxy of GW170817, which highlight the appearance and disappearance of the optical counterpart to the binary neutron star merger. The host galaxy and location of the transient are highlighted in both images, while the transient is seen in the first image. The first image was taken 0.5-1.5 days after the merger and the second image was taken over 14 days after the merger.
