"The removal of masks in healthcare settings is mind-boggling. It’s kind of in the same vein as if people were like, “Yeah, well, HIV is not new anymore, so people handling blood or contaminated material don’t need to wear gloves in a healthcare setting.” bu.edu/articles/2023/

This was a fun chat — a bit of a random walk though cosmology and existential terror 😁

When someone is as singularly repugnant as Cruz is there’s no need to fabricate screenshots to illustrate his awfulness but anyway it’s not really about him; I just figured people would want to know if they’re inadvertently spreading something made-up

Testing before spending time with people is a simple kindness that can prevent a lot of pain. 💙

Narrowly missed getting exposed this week at a family dinner. My elderly parents had the good sense to test when they had symptoms, and sent this to me a couple of hours before we were to meet. They are very medically vulnerable and thankfully they were able to start antiviral… Show more

Really enjoyed talking cosmic destruction at the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers meeting this morning! 🌌🧑‍🏫⚛️ (I may have also gone on a bit of a rant about protons. In my defense, they are infuriating: sciencefocus.com/news/it-may-be)

In my happy place, talking about physics with physics teachers @Perimeter. Very cool (and sometimes 🔥) keynote with @AstroKatie! #OAPT2023

This is terrifying: a marketer pinged me for quote permission — common for a journalist. Only I didn’t recognize the text as something I’d ever said. Pumping it into Google returned nothing. I asked where he got it: ChatGPT. AI fabricated a quote and attributed it to me. 🧵

I've watched several news stories now that are covering this as a story bringing attention to the plight of homelessness, as if this is not about a man strangling another to death because he didn't like how he was behaving. Homelessness is a problem, but it didn't cause this.

“She’s probably going to block me for this but…” Yes! Gold star, well done sir, I didn’t even finish reading your tweet, I got distracted by a fluffy cloud outside and it was just way more interesting

Anyway there is nothing wrong with blocking someone at any point, even mid-conversation, if you take a glance at their timeline and decide you don’t want to invite them into your parlor. No one is paying you to be here and entertain every stranger you meet.

There are people here I care a lot about and I do think that there are interesting discussions to be had but none of that makes me keen to placate people who get aggro in my mentions, it is a waste of their time and immaterial to me

My level of investment in this platform is extremely low at the moment; I have precisely zero incentive to engage in discussions initiated by strangers and blocking immediately at the slightest hint of a bad vibe costs me nothing. If you come at me I honestly couldn’t care less.

I don’t think it should be surprising that certain kinds of rhetoric can be harmful/immoral even when presented as “just trying to understand the science” since it’s clear that there are methods of scientific experimentation that are unethical even if scientifically effective.

To my trans friends / followers / strangers: I’m deeply sorry that people are taking it upon themselves to devil’s-advocate your life and well-being and I want to be clear that I support and celebrate you being who you are and getting whatever kind of care you need to be well.

“Both sides are crazy” isn’t a neutral or impartial position when one side is arguing for the oppression and elimination of marginalized people and the other side is arguing for letting people live their lives in peace. It’s just a callous attempt to evade moral integrity.
