Is it flattering? No, it is not. Would it be appropriate even if it were flattering? Not even a little.

I get messages like this rarely enough that each one is remarkable. I have friends/colleagues for whom this is constant background noise.

Here's a great article on why this stuff is not OK. (via

I wrote back to the e-mail I received today with a link to his university's Equal Opportunity office training page.

Oo lemme try: "now talk about stag beetles!" Does this work?
-
Or does the new topic have to be something related but that you judge more serious? I'm new to demands like this.
-
Normally if someone is talking about something I consider unimportant I just ignore or unfollow.
-
Did not say it was unimportant. Just not the way the thing has taken on a life of its own. Not like, say, campus rapes?

I don't take requests. Have a nice day.

An honest reaction will allow for an innocent intention of the sender. Otherwise, you're just ranting.
-
I don't care at all about intentions but how a message like that could even be imagined to have "innocent intentions" is beyond me
-
Exactly. This doesn't get excused by "whoops, my bad for misunderstanding." This shouldn't be excused at ALL.
-
The "innocent intent" was one of the favorite responses of Geoff Marcy. It's not innocent, and that excuse has been weaponized by harassers
