Telling people "If you're sick, stay home" is important but if their employers have been told it's okay to be doing business and they don't have sick leave, it's hardly surprising they keep going to work as long as they can.https://twitter.com/kcexec/status/1276599273459601408 …

Our contact tracers have noted a disturbing pattern: Only one in five people is self-isolating when they develop COVID-19 symptoms. Close to 80% continue to circulate in the community. That needs to stop. If you're sick, stay home. https://komonews.com/news/coronavirus/only-1-in-5-isolating-when-covid-symptoms-develop-king-county-says …

For context, @kcexec is the Executive for King County Washington, where restaurants are currently allowed to operate at 50% capacity for indoor dining. How many of those restaurant workers get sick leave? How many can afford to lose their jobs right now by staying home?

In principle, Washington State *does* require paid sick leave, and is one of the few places in the country where that's true. But that requirement is very limited (something like 1 hour of leave for every 40 worked) -- not enough to cover much if you get legitimately sick.

🚨 Important update! Looks like there HAS been some helpful emergency legislation around this issue that I've missed: many US workers are currently eligible for two weeks of sick leave if they have COVID-19 symptoms: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/pandemic/ffcra-employee-paid-leave … (thx @jacobtaber). 🚨 Further update: New paid leave law not actually as comprehensive as it sounds, in practical terms, because America. From https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/06/sick-leave-covid-time-off/612361/ …, “only 47 percent of private-sector workers will have guaranteed access to coronavirus-related sick leave” (thx @GlennF for link)

The more details i read about america, the more obvious it get´s how incredibly anti social it is in comparison to it´s vast wealth. One can only hope this pandemic will open some peoples eyes, but right now i don´t see this ending anytime soon.

It's so weird to have a limit on sick days, as of diseases followed some calendar. In Brazil, if you need more than 30 days of sick leave, the government just pays your salary from your social security money. (Obvs for people in formal jobs, informality is a huge problem too)

I can’t begin to tell you how weird this concept sounds for someone living in Germany. Six weeks of sick leave get payed in full by the company. After that, mandatory heath insurance will pay 80% of your income.

In California, after working for a full year, I've saved up exactly 42 hours of sick leave but are highly encouraged to never use it because "we have deadlines coming up and need all hands on deck" constantly.

California has the mandatory sick leave as well. The problem comes when people don't use it. "What if I need it for later?"

WA state has required paid sick leave and recently passed Paid Family and Medical Leave: https://paidleave.wa.gov/get-ready-to-apply/ … We're doing a lot better than most states.
