I think fewer people would be excited about moving to Mars if they knew that they’d have to live in deep, shielded caves and that still might not be enough to save them. Good piece by @caleb_scharf on the hazards of living without a global magnetic fieldhttps://blogs.scientificamerican.com/life-unbounded/death-on-mars1/?amp …

The point of the Martian fantasy, at least amongst the broligarchy (actual and would-be), is less as a survival strategy per se than as something for only the few, the select Randian few. It's almost a secular rapture.

There’s definitely part of me that thinks they should just get to Mars-ing already and reduce the surplus bropulation

Even aside from that, it's amazing the cognitive dissonance that lets people believe we can't undo 2° of change here (or didn't cause it in the first place!), yet we can geoengineer a 100° shift on another planet.

And magically toss in a magnetic field/breathable atmosphere to boot, for the more ambitious plans.

Musk, Bezos and Branson are engaging in narcissistic ego driven fantasies. Their billions could solve real problems for real people right now. Instead they choose their big man toys.
-
Musk is responsible for more people making a sharp reduction in fossil fuel usage than anyone else, so I think we should give him some credit for that.

As I like to point out to people - "Can you imagine how hard it is to live in Antarctica? Well, that is trivial compared to trying to live on the Moon or Mars."

I love space exploration and the whole idea of colonising it, but on a purely practical level, wouldn't colonising the deep sea make more sense if you'd had surviving a planet wide catastrophe in mind?
-
Makes sense to me but it would still be nice to reach out into space and other planetary bodies over time.

Yeah, people don't, ir tend not to,realize that everywhere in the Solar System (and elsewhere, as far as we know) is ridiculously hostile to human life. This planet is the only one we've got for the foreseeable future.
