If it is “a cultural thing” or otherwise entirely well-meaning of you to casually or affectionately touch other people when they DO NOT WANT to be touched, you 100% need to stop, now. (How do you know they do not want? Pay attention. Ask. Or just assume it & leave them alone.)

I have a coworker I've had to have a couple of conversations with about this. Their attentions don't come off as sexual harrassment, but they DO come off as assertions of power. It was only when I mentioned the dread words Aich and Arr that they were brought up short.

I think, in general, touching people from behind is not considered courteous normal social behavior. Not something people do peer to peer, when they don’t know each other very well. When someone in a superior position does it innocently, it means they have not even *considered*.
-
Oh, and I have never had a straight, bi, or gay woman do that to me, ever. Nor have I ever had a platonic male friend do it, either. And if an older man or woman did this to me, I would not think of it as maternal or paternal. Or avuncular. So.

I consider myself a fluid, tolerant person, but when somebody touches my shoulders, waist, neck, or head from behind, and I don’t know who it is– I turn and say instantly, do not ever touch me from behind again. Then I smile. And that’s peer to peer! Whole different ball game.

Honestly, they need to just legalize small personal Tasers.

Wait..what do you mean, "They 'need' to legalize.."? They're not legal? *slowly hides freshly bedazzled taser and slinks away quietly*

Something that bugs me is sales training where you're encouraged (forced) to offer hand shakes to customers. It kind of forces people to touch - and I'm super uncomfortable with it. I'm sure it's uncomfortable for customers too
