The bad news is: just knowing about this effect does not make you immune to it. The good news is: having people you respect around who can call you on your BS can actually be pretty effective.

There’s an excellent episode of
@HiddenBrain that goes into all the science of this. Check it out:https://www.npr.org/2018/01/23/579976635/the-power-hour …এই থ্রেডটি দেখান -
Addendum:
@chrisdc77 has some thoughts about the@TheAtlantic article linked in my thread above (and especially about the “damage” framing of the results) — see his thread here:https://twitter.com/chrisdc77/status/1000779828839186432?s=21 …এই থ্রেডটি দেখান

I think framing this as "damage" is counter productive. Power does not damage the brain, the brain changes when it's environment does. Better to ask what the changes are that cause cognitive shifts than say that power is damaging the brain. (Says the rich and powerful guy).
-
I think when you lose an ability you had before (empathy, reading of emotions on other people’s faces), that counts as damage.
-
I disagree. I also am not calling you out here, though, just trying to deal with my own shit without feeling brain damaged.
-
It’s not irreversible damage, if that’s what you’re worried about. And you can frame it however you like. But being aware that there may be acquired deficits is important, as is having strategies to compensate for them.
-
I think the specific label of "brain damage" implies that the changes are unfixable, as well as implying that it was caused by some sort of injury or disease.

@sTeamTraen is this legit or likely bs? -
It reads to me very much like clickbait-as-usual, but you might get a more nuanced opinion from a proper neuroscientist like
@chrisdc77. (Disclaimer: Chris is an Aussie, so nuance may not be on the menu.) -
Yeah I’m afraid this ticks all of the boxes for honking neurobollocks.
-
Which study/result do you think is wrong? My understanding was that there have been several studies showing empathy decreases with power
-
I’ll try to tweet more detailed comments later but this is the usual combination of weak inferences together with a neuroscience component that adds no information, only hype (of the “it’s in the brain so it must be real” variety plus egregious brain “damage” narrative).
-
Ok a few quick thoughts. Just noticed btw this article is nearly a year old. God it's awful. Let's get this over with.
-
1. The headline is irresponsible. There is no evidence that power causes brain damage and anyone suggesting otherwise needs to present extraordinary evidence to support such a claim. This is 100% rootin’ tootin’ hot diggity A-grade prime cut
@neurobollocks. Accept no imitations. -
2. The mentioned brain stimulation study that purportedly shows how induced power “impaired a specific neural process” is poor. Includes no controls for a host of other neural processes that might have been influenced by the “power priming” procedure and >

Poor interpretation of science. More accurate that power adapts perception to better wield elevated status. Lower status heightens importance of interpersonal alliances, which require empathy. Higher status requires more Machiavilian manipulation, which empathy can inhibit.
-
For the moment, I’m gonna stick with the interpretation that the scientists doing the research put forward
-
I'm really disappointed that an astrophysicist with your credibility is promoting this article. It is understandable that you want to give authors the benefit of the doubt as a scientist. But there is a huge chasm between their work & the points made in that piece.
-
Thanks for the feedback.
-
The real discussion here is that science is once again supporting an idea that being too rich is antithetical to humanity (you have less empathy) and its socio-economic implications. This would explain a lot of our current system and a good scientific argument for socialism
