Congratulations to Dr. who just successfully defended his fantastic Ph.D. dissertation on a new model for stellar halo simulations! It's been a pleasure being his advisor.

Breaking my Twitter moratorium to make sure astronomers are aware there is a new supernova in M101 at 7 Mpc. It is a core collapse supernova caught very young, at 14.9 mag. Supernovae this close only come around once a decade, so get on it! wis-tns.org/object/2023ixf

#HappyMothersDay!
Dr. Nancy Grace Roman is often called the "Mother of Hubble". Her work at @NASA made Hubble's mission possible, and also helped pave the way for space-based telescopes like @NASAWebb and @NASARoman.

This is going to become my new official "working on a proposal" album. At least, if I get the one I'm working on now.

Now playing: 5F_55 is reflected to 5F-X. Been trying to find this album at a reasonable price for over a decade... and it's everything I hoped. Masterful powernoise.

"Waiting for Betelgeuse" is a play by Samuel Beckett in which two astronomers engage in a variety of Twitter discussions and encounters while awaiting the titular #Betelgeuse explosion, which never arrives.

I think given the amount of coffee we drink, HST and JWST should also be considered grounds-based observing

On a day when my waves resemble the gales of November, I ask...
Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
Rest in peace, Gordon Lightfoot, you will always have a place here. It's been good to know ya. 🙏🌊

here's a good image showing the comparison of the new #JWST data to the data. It's still astounding to me how incredibly sensitive this telescope is - you can see it here: less than a day vs. 11+ days of exposure time
