The "launch key" is the device that triggers the engine ignition sequence at the launch pad for a Soyuz rocket launch, and as part of pre-launch tradition every crew member receives one. I'm pretty skeptical about it actually working, but hey - ya never know.

I love having the opportunity to inspire the next generation. Kids dream big, without self-doubt; I hope I offer them a spark that ignites their imaginations, after all .. with a healthy dose of hard work to grow it, one child's passion for space could end up reshaping the world!

Got lucky and snapped this pic just before sunset. Is it just me or does it look like the perfect sun emoji?!

I love this picture of our Soyuz craft approaching the , but it's the razor thin atmosphere that really catches my eye. That tiny blue line is the only thing protecting us from the harsh elements of space.

.'s solar arrays are vital to Station, but designed with a 15yr service life - those things are MASSIVE and extremely difficult to transport. While I was in space we experimented w/roll out solar arrays (ROSA) which may be a viable way to replace them in the future.

Conditions have never been more suited to support a sustainable Moon presence. Over the past 10 years the dynamic blend of reduced cost barriers, policy alignment, and a strong market push has provided the perfect opportunity to begin making humanity a multi-planetary species.

Going to space I was fearful of not doing my part well enough. People have devoted their whole lives to developing experiments that they were entrusting to me to run or install on the - I didn't want to do anything wrong that could compromise their life's work.

What will space digs look like in the future? Maybe like this BEAM. It's an inflatable structure that compresses for flight and blows up like a balloon in space! This one is used for storage on the now, but inflatable habitats have a promising future in space!

As a living tribute dating back to Yuri Gagarin (the first person in space) every person to launch into space from Baikonur plants a tree beside the Avenue of Cosmonauts. The second photo is the actual tree that Yuri himself planted before his first spaceflight in 1961.

4yrs ago I retired from , a little unsure of my path. But now I see that 'astronaut' was just a step in a path I am still walking. I'm grateful that my time at NASA helped prepare me for this exact moment, the opportunity w/ to help get the USA back to the Moon!

In space it only takes 7 seconds for a sunrise to go from below the horizon to a full disk (and we got to witness 16 of them every day)!

One of the coolest things about being in space is definitely the view, but it's more than just taking pretty pictures- we photograph things like erosion, sedimentation, irrigation... All of the photos we take can be used by scientists to track the Earth and understand it better.

Working in space is just a small part of the job, I was w/NASA for 9yrs, but only spent about 5 months of it in space. The majority of time is spent training, supporting active missions & prepping for future missions. While being an astronaut is an exciting job, it's still a job.

Don’t let the old floppy drive fool you. With the right mechanic at the helm, our Electrical Discharge Machine (EDM) is a workhorse. By vertically integrating this machine, we’re saving precious time on our mission to the Moon.

Wow, what a fun-filled day at @Int_Machines! It is amazing to see the magnitude of what this team can do in preparation for us to explore the Reina Gamma region on the Moon with #NASAScience and @NASA_Technology payloads! Thank you to the entire team for an amazing visit. twitter.com/Int_Machines/s…

Being an astronaut is an incredible experience and I can honestly tell you I didn't get there by being the best or the smartest person in the room - I got there by working hard to reach my goals. If you seize the opportunities that are given to you anything is possible!
