Yesterday, the rover fired the next shot in our interstellar war with Mars by abrading several mm of rock. This action is ostensibly in preparation for another sampling attempt, but is in fact a warning to the planet not to fuck with us.

In 2015, the merging of two black holes emitted 3.6 septillion (3,600,000,000,000,000,000,000) yottawatts of power, which is greater than the combined power of all light radiated by every star in the observable universe.

In later years Lemaître was the first in Belgium to do numerical astrophysics, calculating trajectories of cosmic rays, which he hoped were remnants of the primeval atom. He learned of the discovery of the cosmic microwave background on his death bed.

From Dirac’s archives: a drawing of Lemaître after a Colloquium at Cambridge stating “but I don’t believe in the Finger of God agitating the ether”. Not clear to me whether that is really a quote from him or actually some mockery.

Lemaître called this a “hesitating universe” which started from a “primeval atom”. Today we talk of dark energy and Big Bang. What a poetic description to think of a universe that is “hesitating” to give us time to develop life and explore it before it “explodes” and fades away.

The idea of a beginning was considered ridiculous by most physicists at the time and Lemaître was suspect because of his Catholic background. Einstein considered it abominable and Eddington called it repugnant. So, Lemaître responded in a letter to Nature.

Fascinating results from the experiment today! Four complementary analyses show no signs of a theorized fourth kind of neutrino known as the .

Designing the aircrafts for DUNE was the perfect intersection between art, biology and engineering. I was honored to help visualize Denis Villenueve's world and to help the ships become characters in his visionary film.

Not mincing words. As a permafrost scientist & IPCC author, I say with confidence that the cryosphere is in DIRE shape. Climate policy NOW will dictate the fate of the Arctic. In turn, the Arctic will influence all of our climate for many generations.

A fountain of lava more than half a kilometre tall. It looks incredible—but not really surprising when you consider the pressure magma is under even at shallow depths in the crust. Think how heavy the ground is. Then add gases to the magma. And you get... this ↓

A track through sand. Something so innocuous, so mundane. But this track is through the sands of another planet, made by a machine that humans built and sent there. Wheel tracks from , imaged with the rover's left Mastcam-Z camera on Saturday, 23 October, 2021.

All these new commercial space stations - they seem to be planning to send up expensive modules over the course of years. Am I being naive here or is the wrong approach? Build a minimum viable modules, send them up quickly, and fit them out as you go.
