It is with a heavy heart that the Africa Bureau mourns the loss of Ambassador Princeton Lyman, a dear friend, colleague, and mentor to many of us. He was a kind, thoughtful, respected scholar and true friend of Africa.

An unsung hero of South Africa's peaceful transition to democracy. He kept the negotiations for a new constitution going through some potentially disastrous sticking points via backroom talks and never sought any credit. A real loss.

I learned so much from him, personally and professionally, during the 2 years I served as his deputy while he served as the special envoy for the 2 Sudans. He was a great diplomat, respected & loved by his team members and all who came to know him. Larry André

On last Friday Ambassador Lyman was memorialized at @USIP event - honoring a distinguished diplomat and public servant – though #SouthSudan sent no Rep. to honor this fine man - All know he is greatly loved there (by me too) — and all Others who help SSdn https://youtu.be/yadZ4-9WQnQ pic.twitter.com/zgzI4dbrxg

Princeton was so much fun to work with as well as a person with superb judgment and deft ideas on how to resolve situations. Always right to trust him. Seems impossible he is gone. The whole world should mourn his departure and celebrate his life.

May his soul Rest In Peace. Amen. Can someone here who respects Lyman’s legacy speak up about the #GenocideInSouthernCameroons? The Govt of La Republique du Cameroun is targeting the English-speaking minority and despite all the massacre the world is silent! Please help.pic.twitter.com/OqjkKyFZ5s
