Can we have a twitter thread where we list all of the therapies and supports that parents -can- use to help their autistic kid? My go-to is ear defenders/earplugs/sunglasses/hoodies/fidget toys/punching bag

Disabled/chronically ill people shouldn’t have to feel guilty when they can’t leave the house or follow through with plans. It’s okay to maintain your boundaries. In fact, I encourage it! If you repeatedly take that personally, your disabled friends aren’t the problem.

The medical assistant at my PCP’s office just saw fit to comment “we were on a roll not seeing you for while!” Thank you SO MUCH for reminding me that as a chronically ill person, I have to go to the doctor a lot. Sorry being here now broke some kind of streak for you. Get bent.

Designers who create wheelchairs that climb stairs misunderstand the problem. The problem is the stairs, not the wheelchair. A lot of people don't use wheelchairs, but also can't climb stairs. By mistaking the problem, designers leave us out.

If only I had stuck to my routine, ate lunch early, and made myself eat my usual snack before my class, I probably wouldn't have endured 2 hours of sensory hell and frustration. Routine is a great way to combat alexithymia and keep your internal needs met if you stick to it. 5/5

You drive home in heavy traffic, annoyed. You decide you're going to treat yourself to ice cream at home. You get home. You complain to your husband. A few minutes pass and then you think.. "Oh I guess I didn't have enough food today. That's why I was so angry and annoyed!" 4/5

and you have to tell yourself "not now, you still have time, you have to sit here and pay attention." sniffle. key press. key press. key press. cough. key press. key press. Even your own key presses are starting to annoy you even though you type lightly. You start fidgeting 3/5

The class is small and casual, low-pressure, but the coughing, sniffling, and loud typing got to me even with my headphones on. Every sound was a little attention-grabbing distraction. It is like having a constant itch that you can't scratch constantly grabbing your attention 2/5

Quick thread on stress, alexithymia, and sensory sensitivities. One example, my night: I had an evening class, so I saved my lunch at work to eat for early evening. My stomach was growling all day but I just kept thinking "I'm fine" because I didn't feel -that- hungry. 1/5

Can we talk about autism & tiredness? For as long as I've had a car, I've taken naps in them. Often. I thought it was normal until folk said it wasn't, then I thought it was a health thing. But it's just people & events make me tired.

“Can I just have a quick word?” with a brilliant article and accompanying video about the devastation of prejudice. Here's what happened when one man disclosed that he was autistic at a diversity & inclusion training at his job

I wouldn't agree it was a stupid comment. Uncomfortable yes, but it reflects the stigma we face. All too often people see us that way because they don't think twice. The poster clearly has which is progress. I would agree though that those people may just have been arseholes 😉

This isn't rude... it's absolutely true. When non-autistic people think that we are like them, they ascribe motives onto our actions that we did not intend. People always think my compliments are condescending passive aggression. They're just literal. "good job" = good job

This is ludicrous. Opiods suck but I would never have survived my neurosurgeries on Tylenol + toradol. The war on opiods will go the way of all previous “wars” on drugs, with much collateral damage.

My hs did the wheelchair simulation thing, and one time I was in the hall and these two girls were behind me. One said, “Oh, it must be the week when they do that wheelchair project!” and the other uncomfortably goes “No... That’s the girl that’s actually in a wheelchair...”

This is a thread for all the little Black girls trying to navigate life with hair society tells you isn't beautiful. Wear your hair how you want. Get it wet, life's more fun underwater. And if you see me in the field with my coils going rogue 8/9

Today in my Skype a Scientist session a girl asked me a hard hitting question: what do you do with your hair when you go in the ocean. Idk if y'all realize this, but these are real concerns. The simple answer I gave was: I put it in a pony tail, but it's so much more complex 1/9

Do you experience physical ear pain from moderately loud sounds? (ex. sirens, classroom bells, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, toilet flushing, buses stopping, dishes clinking, people shouting/talking loudly, etc.) Feel free to comment.
