That specific trolley didn't kill the man on that thousand-mile stretch as it was replaced completely, but your diversion still caused a trolley - regardless of the original or the new one - to kill that specific man. Therefore the continuity exists within the act of diverting.
In short: Did that same trolley kill that man even though it was replaced? No. Did diverting the trolley to that track cause that man to die even though the original trolley was replaced? Yes. Still like the thought experiment mashup tho :)
Now mix in the Prisoner’s Dilemma
The trolley was re-assembled wrong and everyone on the trolley and the crew assembling it died via a horrible explosion but the man on the track survived — the trolley. He was eaten by wolves because he was tied down.
