practice & can unwittingly create a limiting hollowness. In buddhist *modernism* there's often very little acknowledgment that buddhism is reduced to fit our current world-picture as if it were the 'true' axis around which all things ought to be understood.

treating the notion of no-Self like a religious *belief*, regardless of whatever ontological truth it entails, which can be just as problematic as the clinging to some *limited* notion of Self, such as an 'I am x', or 'I am y'. The difference is *much* more semantic in... >

'religious' belief, adopt & cling to buddhism with the same pious exclusivity, as if they've 'converted'. Yet say it's not religious, emphasising the empirical nature of practice, which I don't deny, but as if only buddhism possesses it, or does it 'right'. Furthermore... >

thinking as if buddhism arose ex nihilo, entirely distinct from the surrounding Indian traditions at large. Also, the link makes with the deep currents of protestant thinking in the modern worldview, such that ppl, in the absence or modern rejection of... >

A good read. Lots I find myself agreeing with. Particularly 2 things: being a good friend of buddhism & buddhist exceptionalism. My reasons cross over, but are also different. The monopoly on the dialogue around meditation as if the 'right' way is exclusive to buddhism... >

Looks like deleted original tweet. But it was a question for meditators asking about how one might deal with defeat, like the loss or collapse a major life project. The impermanence-idea or attempting 'equanimity' may provide comfort, but may only amount to that.

There comes a point at which your whole life; victories & defeats, shames, joys & losses felt as if a single packed timeless moment. With it a surrender like no other, a desperate clinging to be lets go. In a sense, death. An abiding Peace remains. Actually it was always there.

Of the mid-20th century phenomenologists, Merleau-Ponty-Ponty's work (eg. Phenomenology of Perception) is arguably one of the most fruitful in terms of its practical implications on the conduct of natural science.

Agreed. I also believe there's the real possibility (not inevitability) of a new renaissance in the fullest sense. But in its nascence resistance amplifies. Common wisdom is spoken & thought of *as if* finally settled, only details interior to it need be quibbled over.

Only ever saw pics of William James as older dude with big older dude 19th Century beard. Who knew he was so rock & roll in his younger days? Great article btw. On a thinker that ought to be more appreciated in 21st C.

[Will meditation help me to reach your state?] "Meditation will help you to find your bonds, loosen them, untie them and cast off your moorings. When you are no longer attached to anything, you have done your share. The rest will be done for you.” — Nisargadatta

In 3rd person physical model it's a matter of indifference whether I (you) exist; I'm (we're) merely person x. Experienc(ing) drops out (is *disavowed*). In 1st person it's an immediate actuality that I'm (we're) here. A bit like: the world is *just there* vs *here* I am.

"basic particles" are abstractions from patterns of activity that physics describes best it can using mathematics. we know for certain that whatever this activity is, it is not simply located bits of inertly enduring stuff.

    - very similar to my comments in our group discussions viz. AI. Though I'm much more sceptical about realisation of genuine concrete subject of experiencing.
