I just discovered that one university where I teach allows students to record and pronounce their names IN the electronic roster so that faculty can listen to it and pronounce it right. Why doesn't every university do this? (And I bet most students don't even know about it!)

Prof: I think everyone can hear me, I don’t need the microphone right, you people in the back? Me (from the back): This is a 300 person class and huge lecture hall! Please don’t ask people to disclose their accessibility needs and just USE. THE. MICROPHONE. Prof: ok I guess

Think Indigenous students get a free or easy ride into university? In reality the funding is inadequate and students that do get some funding can face backlash. Some of the reasons that motivated this research.

It can be difficult to discuss the gap between the rich and the poor with others. But try this! Great demonstration (first 2.5 mins).

Evidence based medicine isn’t the patriarchy. Choosing a therapy without knowing the supporting data or lack of data isn’t an informed choice. You can’t get unbiased health information from someone selling product. A randomized double blinded trial shows Reiki isn’t effective.

We’re not asking people not to love football, or their city, or a legacy, or their families traditions. We’re just asking people to stop using Native imagery as mascots. These two things can exist at the same time. The name can change, the allegiance to your movement can stay.

I don't know what professor or TA needs to hear this but your strict attendance policy is ableist and also bad for public health

I used to think BMI was simply a poor measure of health... But no — BMI and everything it stands for is a *DETRIMENT* to health and a key player in the RAMPANT weight stigma that infects our medical system.

Dear students, Some days in academia, you are killing it- analyses crunches, papers published, students engaged. Other days you’re biggest accomplishment is that you didn’t quit. Remember both types of days are equally productive

I work in a mental health hospital/research centre now and one thing I’ve noticed: research study recruitment posters are often stigmatizing. “Are you someone who suffers from a mental disorder” is probably not the best way to recruit someone for your study.

When I entered academic job market, I was pregnant w/my 1st. Had 5 campus interviews near due date & told the only female search committee chair of the bunch know. She cancelled my visit & I never heard from them again. I think about this a lot serving as search committee chair.
