Sometimes because they are forced to. Faculty don’t have a lot of input over admissions. So if students are admitted somebody has to advise them. The matchup is usually based on research interests, not advisory skill. And most faculty get absolutely no mentor training.

Gosh we really gotta do something about that! I always pictured admissions as being hyper-communicative with profs about who they might be admitting, especially at the PhD level! Checking in type inquiries. This whole system sucks. I’m mad for all of us.

May 2020 be the year that scholars set boundaries for themselves in order to protect them + the people they might be hurting (whether consciously or not) along the way! DON'T TAKE ON RESPONSIBILITIES YOU CANNOT HANDLE! IT'S OKAY TO SAY NO!

I will never understand why people are allowed to be supervisors without any checking if they are really capable of supervising and if they understand what does it mean.

For sure. It's not some title to take lightly. You're literally in charge of mentoring another person. A LIVING BREATHING PERSON WHO EXISTS AND IS LOOKING TO YOU FOR AID. I'm wondering what a screening process would look like to be an "effective" supervisor.

University KPI. My uni says that no lecturer is allowed to be without a student.

Sometimes they do for other reasons: their CV; the credits they get for supervising a PhD.. These are NOT good reasons of course..
