Hey fellow what is your one sentence explanation that you give your family when they ask you what you do? Mine is, "ask pregnant women what they eat during different seasons"

  2. Tweeted too soon bc while on my commute this afternoon, 6 Italian school children started heckling by screaming at me, “SHE’S CHINESE! SHE HAS CORONAVIRUS!” followed by laughing, pointing, etc.

Headlines will read "UPLIFTING: Local philanthropist pays off $3000 in school lunch debt" and people will take it at face value instead of questioning why "school lunch debt" exists. Our current food system systematically oppresses the poor.

  8. Another fieldwork update: Just got an email from my booking company that my flight to Cambodia has been cancelled because it passes through Hong Kong... WELL ISN'T THIS JUST THE BEST DAY!

And then, another fun supervisor story: I once asked if anything about harassment and/or relationships were addressed in the training for supervisors. Was told that the only thing they were told is "don't hold supervisions in a room with a bed in it". End training.

Where I worked, it would’ve been really welcome during that selection process of who supervises who—just some vetting, training and formal agreement that students and early-career staff alike will be safe from overwork, abuse and/or discriminatory behavior.

Advising is a multi-year commitment and circumstances change. Funding, teaching and admin duties, family/life/health. The same faculty may be a very different kind of adviser at any given time point and since we don’t really get mentoring support our advisees can also suffer.

Sometimes because they are forced to. Faculty don’t have a lot of input over admissions. So if students are admitted somebody has to advise them. The matchup is usually based on research interests, not advisory skill. And most faculty get absolutely no mentor training.

  18. May 2020 be the year that scholars set boundaries for themselves in order to protect them + the people they might be hurting (whether consciously or not) along the way! DON'T TAKE ON RESPONSIBILITIES YOU CANNOT HANDLE! IT'S OKAY TO SAY NO!

  19. Why do some people even accept the role of supervisor when they clearly aren't available or in the right headspace to have that level of potential influence and responsibility?

  21. All these feels are flooding bc I’m waiting for a fellowship result. All of the former recipients tend to be non-Cambodian researchers researching Cambodia and it’s making me nervous. I hope they give me a chance to learn from fellow Khmer people! I WANT TO LEARN!
