"We held out longer than any other major urban," he said, referring to the LA, SD and Long Beach announcements today. He said Fresno State's closure also had an impact. Other smaller districts in the area may feel the pressure and follow, but it's up to each to make a decision.

Officials discussed distance learning, like the colleges are doing, but Nelson understands there is not "universality of WiFi" across his district and it wouldn't be fair to those without access. Staff will be paid throughout the break.

Early learning and adult school is included in the closure. Nelson said we are facing an "unprecedented reality." In his 50 years alive, he doesn't remember ever having a school district close this way.

The district will establish a call center over the weekend for questions and concerns. The decision was not made lightly, he said, and they realize the "incredibly significant impact" it will have on families.
