I'm trying to figure out how: autonomous vehicles/bike lanes/app taxis/Internet of Things/drones will make this a better street. Having difficulty. (Bari, Italy)

  4. Personally, whether to fete or fault shared electric scooters, I don't think 'mode-shift' is relevant when it's less than 1% of all trips (in the case of Chicago, 0.05%!) More critical is viability for operators, utility for users and ease of oversight for officials

  5. "In terms of the polish of the frame and battery integration into the frame I would say the ride1up is on par with my trek powerfly and much better than my bulls evo 29er" [Trek is in the 'Big Three' of US bike brands] 'Polish' is becoming a commodity

  6. Rad Power bikes has done well stateside despite generic, somewhat lackluster frames and powertrains. (Despite being a leading brand, they still only offer one size fits all, and the controller is not integrated )

  7. In Europe, more established brands are more popular, but they cost far more (Bosch, Brose, and their customers, etc). I don't see that taking off in the US, and they may even lose share in Europe.

  8. For the near future at least, generic frames may become dominant among American sales, as custom frame-makers must charge a premium with little user benefit to recover custom development costs, especially since vehicle volumes and industry consolidation is low.

  9. Who wore it best QuietKat for Jeep / Aventon Level / Ride1Up 700 (only the latterhas been released, just over a month ago) Appears to be the same frame, though the Jeep uses a mid-drive. Looks like high quality e-bike frames with integrated batteries are becoming commodities.

  12. Also, the transit operating subsidy of ~$1 per passenger mile is actually too high, because shared scooter rides are overwhelmingly in higher density areas where transit operating losses are apt to be smaller; transit may even run a surplus there.

  14. Or even better, subsidize secure bike parking solutions like and others, so people can actually use the bike they own without risk and worry.

  15. If you want to subsidize something, subsidize vehicle purchases, particularly e/bikes. At a nominal 15k miles (based on 500 wh battery x 500 cycles) and a $500 subsidy. That's $0.03/mile. Throw in a free trial month of leasing from someone that leases e-bikes month to month.

  16. *And* whether people are even willing to link scooter trips with transit in any meaningful percentage of total transit boardings. This hasn't happened with bikeshare, where price is not even an issue. That's fine. Both are an option in their own right

  17. No one has even a working concept of how this could be achieved, not without subsidies far in excess of typical transit subsidies of $1/mile. Or any evidence of mean trips per user over ~2.5 per month on scooters...

  18. How can a service with luxury pricing for routine transport at short distances only, entice people *en masse* from cars coming from afar and largely non-affluent transit riders?

  21. Commuter bikes can be like SUVs - your wheels never touch dirt but you put on a bunch of dumb features to look hard. Knobby tires, mountain bike handlebars, heavy suspensions... Often worse with e-bikes, because the motor makes bad design decisions less physically noticeable
