The only person I would encourage to enter such a program is a person so wealthy they do not need a career.

Not applying to the humanities, but the core calculus to me is that literally anything else I could be getting paid to do is just as bad if not worse and I might actually enjoy grad school.

because not only are there no professor humanities jobs, but having a PhD seems to be a liability for getting other jobs, which I illogical and disgusting but also true

I came to the conclusion it's not only because we did years of job training for the wrong job (as usually you won't be an academic scholar in industry) but also inconsistency in training and the lack of proof how proficient we are in our so called "transferrable skills".

Depends on what you are trying to do. Professional programs in the humanities do exist (e.g. MFAs). I also don’t think anyone should be applying to grad school for any program without a very clear sense of what’s being offered and what specific possibilities/pathways they seek.

The market for humanities PhDs could not be more dire, I agree. It does not follow IMO that students should not get an MA.
