My dad told me last week about Somalis building a mosque in Alaska of all places. He gleamed at how Somalis were spreading the deen in America far and wide. I gently told him, no one has spread Islam like African American Muslims in the US. He didn’t push back or puff up.

We can appreciate the brilliance and sacrifice of the global Black Muslim community without being disparaging. This goes for both anti-Black American or Xenophobic commentary. We can also be forgiving of younger Black Muslim voices for missteps — no one is born knowing it all.

This doesn’t mean free range to ignore power dynamics and how white supremacy stratifies us in a myriad of ways. We all hold certain privileges that lead to pathways, while parts of our stories lead to roadblocks. Can we shift the convo to how we can show up for each other?
