Sexuality and gender were tools used by colonizers to dehumanize and mark non-white bodies as "inferior," "savage," "uncivilized," etc. and are thus rooted in oppression. Dismantling these structures is a necessary project.

Sexuality and gender are social constructions that exist in a post-colonial age. We can undo them through unlearning Western society's racist cisheteropatriarchal employment of categorical hierarchies that have positioned the cisgender heterosexual white male on top.

Under their employment, certain ways of embodying sexuality and gender became socially accepted as "normal" while others became marked as "abnormal," "non-productive," "deviant," and further.

This produced new threats of social isolation, ostracization, and violence, which continue to force much of society to conform to binaries many of us still, in our current moment, perceive as "natural," "normal," and always existing.
