Sexuality and gender were tools used by colonizers to dehumanize and mark non-white bodies as "inferior," "savage," "uncivilized," etc. and are thus rooted in oppression. Dismantling these structures is a necessary project.

This produced new threats of social isolation, ostracization, and violence, which continue to force much of society to conform to binaries many of us still, in our current moment, perceive as "natural," "normal," and always existing.
