Society thinks of asexuality as being the antithesis of that which is marked as sexual, but asexuality holds so much more expansiveness beyond that framing.

Sex does not deserve to be afforded such critical social meaning, yet it remains as such in our contemporary society. Sex has come to define how we in turn should define ourselves (i.e. heterosexual, homosexual), but asexuality breaks free from this maze of sexual identity.

There is power in the elasticity of asexual existence - there is no one way to be asexual. Asexuality transcends and crosses through and over so many categorical terms and ways of experiencing attraction, love, and intimacy. And it is there that its beauty lies.

I'm not ace but I id'd that way for a long time. I found and still find the discussion of sensuality, sexuality, romanticism and aestheticism as discrete concepts extremely valuable in understanding my own attractions & in deconstructing what I thought types of relations implied

Imagine thinking that being gay is just a sexual identity lmao
-
Just for clarities sake, are you sugesting that being gay is more than a sexual identity? Or that it is just that, a sexual identity and nothing more? Not attacking, just want to make sure I’m understanding.
-
Being gay is much more than a sexual identity. It's a way we navigate the world, our gender, and our social lives (ESPECALLY our love lives). There's a reason why gay culture is it,s own distinct thing. Saying it's "just" a sexual identity is frankly what homophobes say.

Attraction, love and intimacy are evolved tools centered around reproduction. It is not unreasonable to see reproduction as no longer viable ~30 years before singularity, at least in someone's particular case where more value can be delivered through other means.
-
Sexuality is not reproduction. Being asexual does not mean not wanting children.
-
Agree, and being non-asexual doesn't mean wanting kids. Love is also not reproduction, you could see it as the preservation of one's self, because you're "safer" in company. But as humans we can't really be reduced to simple animal instincts

Cool. Honestly, I think this world could use a lot more of that perspective.

This is such an interesting concept that we really need to explore more. Would love to hear more about this as this is too important to just be a great thread. We need to talk about the ways we interact, bond and desire beyond sex. Desire deserves to be explored beyond the flesh.

Also imagine thinking that gay sex is given the same social meaning as hetero sex lmao

God yes, thank you for saying this.

I get the feeling, but hetero/homosexuality as identies also exists WAY BEYOND sex. To define them other way does not help us.
