Also: Japanese railway companies make all their money from real estate development, and hardly any from selling train tickets

I wouldn't say hardly any, revenue from transportation it ranges from 30 to 80% (in the case of JR)

OK, but of an exaggeration! Though JR Kyushu *lost* money on tickets every year for decades...
