One thing is, the book should push a thesis that can be expressed in simple terms, like "Things are actually good and getting better" or "IQ is legit and matters a lot". Especially if this is the kind of thing people are going to want to use as a plank for their own arguments

I wouldn’t describe either of Harari’s books that way. You could give vague summaries, but they aren’t making a clear case the same way Capital in the 21st or Better Angels do.

Books that succeed are like anything the succeeds (companies, ideas, people, etc), no? A bit of extra talent, a bit of promotion, a *lot* of luck. In every field, probably lots of treasures not getting the attention they deserve!
