I’m a little baffled why Stripe is such a big deal. How was “let’s make it easy to take credit cards on the Internet” an unsolved problem in the 2010s.

The PCI scope reduction that stripe.js provides by tokenizing away the transaction and never having the card info touch the merchant directly while still giving full control to the merchant was killer.

In part, they were able to align technology innovation with delivery of a regulatory benefit to the merchant. FirstData’s PayeezyJS does same.

Stripe (and presumably its banking partners) also took a lot of the mystery and manual steps and delay in getting credit risk clearance for merchants improved.
