I made an illustration for my class of why you need separate validation and training sets and I'm quite happy with it. Has anyone illustrated this similarly before?

Great leaders don’t have all of the answers. Great leaders are great learners. They recognize what they know and don’t know and then ask questions and seek out advice to fill that gap.

Oldies but goldies: G. H. Golub, Christian Reinsch, Singular value decomposition and least squares solutions, 1970. The most popular algorithm to compute efficiently the SVD decomposition.

Illusion of The Year 2019 Winner It's based on a simple Lissajous curve, but uses clever shading/highlighting to create a 'double-axis' illusion

To quote Hamming: "The great scientists often make this error. They fail to continue to plant the little acorns from which the mighty oak trees grow. They try to get the big thing right off."

Greatness is something you pursue, not something you achieve. It starts with holding your present self to higher standards than your past self. You don't get to lower the bar once you've made it. The higher you climb, the more responsible you are for continuing to raise it.

Fresh on : What the zebrafish’s eye tells the zebrafish’s brain. We used 2P imaging and photolabeling to systematically chart the structure and function of zebrafish retinal ganglion cells in the live eye. . 👇

The field is already self-correcting. Good departments/labs are clearing their eyes, caring less about paper count, seeing through the noise. Don't worry so much about the ICML deadline. Slow down, relax, try to do work you're proud of, submit when it's ready.

On Tuesday, in my class, we have learnt that all a neural net does is stretching / contracting the space fabric. For example this 3-layer net (1 hidden layer of 100 positive neurons) gets its 5D logits (2D projections) linearly separable by the classifier hyperplanes (lines).

Had a lot of issues getting the eyelink 1000 to reliably lock the pupil. One issue was infrared bounce off the 32 ch headcoil. Partially solved with a low tech solution - tape! Will try to further optimize camera position. Any one have some tips for success here?

Intuition question. You draw two vectors from an n-dimensional isotropic Gaussian where n>>1. What is the typical angle between them?

One of the best decisions we ever made Applied Deep Learning Research was to standardize on for all our research. It has made us more productive and made our work more fun. Glad to see agrees!

Interesting result. In macaques and in human adults and children, the deepest part of a sulcus is the location of the greatest stimulus selectivity (for scenes). A close coupling between cortical folding pattern and function.
