    After fierce fighting to maintain the Spartans' logistics line along Highway 8, the government center of Baghdad was secured within the day. The "Thunder Run" was proof that armor could be highly effective in urban combat when utilized as part of well-trained combined arms team.

    However, reports suggest that the EM-50 performed better in testing but was deemed “not cool enough” and “too comfortable” by Infantry branch members of the evaluation committee. The whereabouts of the EM-50 are currently unknown.

    At the turn of the century, the EM-50 was brought out of retirement to compete against the modified LAV III for the Interim Armored Vehicle Program. The modified LAV III was selected, becoming the Stryker family of vehicles.

    The EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle was an armored personnel carrier prototype developed in the late 1970s. Built by the General Motors Corporation, the EM-50 was designed to blend in while conducting counterinsurgency, security, and stability operations in population centers.

    Removing layers of old paint the M14/41 received at the Aberdeen Proving Ground have revealed what could possibly be original 'kaki sahariano' ('sand tan') paint that we will be studying further. In our next feature on the M14/41, we will take a look inside at the engine.

    Italian archival records passed to us show that this M14/41 was assigned to the 133rd Divisione Corazzata Littorio in October of 1941. The 133rd ceased to exist after being virtually destroyed fighting against the British at the Second Battle of El Alamein in November 1942.

    The vehicle's hull number (735), engine number (100036), and license plate (Re Eto 3521) confirm that our tank was one of the first 50 M14/41 tanks built. This initial batch of M14/41s were externally identical to the late M13/40s that proceeded them.
