To this day I find something deeply off about the toasted bagel. It's not that I find them disgusting, per se (although I do find melted cream cheese absorbed into the flesh of the bagel to be pretty damn gross)—just...off, as if it's just not meant to be that way

This is the better explanation. Some very large percentage of Jews live in places where bagels needn't be toastedhttps://twitter.com/jacobtaber/status/1217495833664540673 …

Many Jews live in Jewish areas where it is easy to find a fresh, just-baked bagel. Such a bagel should not be toasted. A day-old or frozen bagel, though...toast that puppy.

Americans often improve on the original. Prime steak tacos anyone?

Mine sometimes would, especially for bigger sorta events (bnei mitzvas or whatever) where they would have like lox, whitefish etc. Wasn't an orthodox shul, though

I always thought it was because good bagels don't require toasting, and Jewish people tend to live near good bagels. Since moving from NYC to Pittsburgh, I do more Jewish stuff *and* I've eaten more toasted bagels. (Sorry Pittsburgh.)
