I've wondered if this was due to the scale of spread of the virus. Although the flu might have a faster mutation rate, it doesn't spread nearly as easily and therefore doesn't have as much opportunity.

I think so: those countries that lost control the worst (UK, Brazil) are generating the variants of concern. Recombination detected dueing UK's 2nd/3rd wave which could hevae been prevented if PM Boris Johnson had listened to the much maligned experts.

Perhaps what would have been a great help, is access to all the data from the Wuhan BSL-4 lab, as they have for sometime been studying this virus however we know THAT won’t happen
