Folks often compare Iran-India relations to the Iran-China and Iran-Russia relationships. There are key differences. Good example on display right now: Iranian officials have been quite vocal about the fate of Indian Muslims but we’ve heard nothing but crickets about Uighurs.

We know where Tehran’s heart lies. Trump’s recent visit to affirm US/India strategic relationship certainly didn’t help. Express Tehran’s commitment to China and take an implicit swipe at the strengthening US/India relationship.

Very true. But even with India, Iran has never supported the Kashmiri movement despite many Kashmiri Shias some of whom came to Iran after 1979 and served the rev gov in Tehran. It shows another geopolitical reality for IR: it never supports secessionist movements.

It, of course, didn't support the other Muslim secessionist movement of our time, Kosovo. Iran-run outlets do give a supportive coverage to Scottish independence movement though!

I was at a conference recently when an #Iranian scholar offered #Tehran good offices on #Kashmir. The negative reaction from a former Indian official was swift & unequivocal.
