🤓 We’re like to end this month with a formula that’s quite complicated; it allows rockets to set new records with each launch. If you find our usual questions too easy, we’re counting on you to reply! #ArianeGroup #ArianeFactspic.twitter.com/ykbHncsGdd

The equation defines the amount of matter ejected every second. For example, an Ariane 5 booster rocket’s fuel is depleted in 130 seconds and weighs 240 tonnes, giving an ejection rate of 1.8 tonnes per second… Any additional facts? #ArianeGroup #Ariane5pic.twitter.com/zZZyiq0hln

Maximum mass flow though the throat of a rocket engine? I remember seeing something similar in a lecture 15 years ago ... Didn't the name of the formula start with a W?

That sounds plausible. But damn, it's sad how little fluid mechanics I remember.....

Ok I can’t quite remember (my lecture notes are in my office) but I reckon it’s the rate of flow mass out of a rocket engine, M being the molar mass, Pc and Tc are pressure and temp of combustion chamber, gamma is 5/3, A is the area of the throat? 🤔

Old lecture notes I should say - we don’t get quite this far in my first year UG space science course!
