I do not understand the so called slingshot effect. Obviously a spacecrafts direction can be changed by using gravity, but what speed it gains while approaching a planet will be lost again flying away from it. A gravityfield is a ‘conservative’ field.

What matter is the redirection of the speed Vector, going from a RadialOut to a FullPrograde in the Solar referiential, for instance. This way you improve your heliocentric trajectory, raising tour Ap way higher which is good for external solar system targets.
