I was also incredibly lucky to work with who is one of the most thoughtful and kind people I have ever met in my life. Despite deadlines cutting off all the exits, we had so much fun helping birth @imontheradio’s beautiful story

My bet is that less than a year from today, everyone will be competing for ’s time. She is a superstar writer, interviewer, sound designer, and mentor 🧵

Well, looks like my time with NPR is up. Gutted that @NPRinvisibilia the show I love & have given 7+ yrs of my life to has "stopped production". Gutted to not get to work with my brilliant teammates. Gutted that me & some 100 colleagues I admire have lost our jobs. This sucks.

season 2 is exactly the kind of thing should be doing more. Strong ideas. Strong character. Strong emotions. I want to particularly shout out who has been an incredible leader throughout #NPRLayoffs 🧵

🧵Louder Than A Riot has been cancelled by NPR. Our producers and editor have been laid off, although NPR would like everyone to stay on until June to finish publishing the show. We are taking some time to process what this looks like for our staff. 1/4

Once when I worked at a museum, I was Harry Belafonte’s “bouncer.” On his way out, he shook my hand and thanked me for my hard work. I hardly did a thing that eve. Yet it made perfect sense that Belafonte saw the people around him who were invisible to most. Rest in power ❤️

As an editor, Neena championed stories from marginalized communities by giving them TIME. She made sure we had sensitivity listens, asked tough questions, elevated writing, and most important- wasn’t afraid of having an unpopular opinion.

I am going to miss Neena so, so much. NPR just won’t be the same without her warm and thoughtful presence. But hit her up to work on your show! It’s seriously the best decision you’ll make in 2023.

On a big picture level, Neena is a master at building collective creativity. If you’re lucky enough to work with her— watch out! She’ll trick you into getting tons of work done with her thought provoking questions, baked goods, and book clubs.

@meuceph hired me when I had no experience. She trusted me and helped me. She knew when to release control and when to push us to be better. Her finger prints are everywhere on this show.

How is telehealth transforming domestic violence social work during Covid-19? And what are the consequences for survivors? I wrote about it in

Yes. And also I hate how therapy speak and work speak have converged into a new and horrible style of relationship speak
Quote
For @bustle, I interviewed people who've been on the flip-side of "therapy speak" — ghosted, bailed on, friend-dumped — and spoke to experts to see how we can avoid hurting others in the name of self-care. Give a read! bustle.com/wellness/is-th

We spent two life changing years on this show. From I learned how much work goes into being fair to the people who lived your story, the people who hate your story, people who got locked up or died and therefore couldn’t go on the record.

WE WON. Evil (the show) shut down around 1 am. A handful of us walking in a tiny circle cost them the day’s shoot. We were told the producers were pissed They kept the crew there for hours, sitting on the sidewalk. We felt the solidarity. We’ll win this whole thing together

@StephanieCohn16 is an outstanding reporter and sound designer. She has the unteachable talent of feeling the emotional core of the story and then showing the rest of us. Her notes were outstanding. And her grace under that aforementioned revision 206 admirable.

Someone wrote in a near final version of the script that the story unfolded like origami— intricate, surprising, inevitable. This was precisely true - a testament to Yowei’s rigor and humanity in her storytelling.

I became outspoken about the toxic issue of diversity at @PRI @TheWorld during ‘15/16. Chats with @apsuss lead him to pitch me as a needed Chief Diversity Officer to @alisaamiller. I was ultimately fired by PRI because they were “going in a different direction.” They all knew.

I am personally devastated to not have my friend and mentor in my day to day. Yowei has spent hours teaching me how to write, how to interview, how to prepare so you can have a good time. I wish every person finding their way in this field had someone like her.
