@AriSilvennoinen I'm not missing anything. All you need is view frustum to intersect sphere cone. Easy if sphere is big (viewer on planet).
@nothings As long as the intersection of the cone and the image plane is a closed plane curve we have an ellipse. Otherwise it is a conic.

@AriSilvennoinen Absolutely true. So you agree: the perspective projection of a sphere onto a viewing window is not necessarily an ellipse? -
