2) The high number of piquetes last year was not a surprise; it was the 7th straight year with >5,000 protests. But it demonstrated the scale of public unease, and President @mauriciomacri's struggle to reduce disruptive demonstrations, despite giving police a freer hand.
3) That said, the government is rightly sensitive to accusations it has sought to criminalize street protest, an important element of #Argentina's political culture, especially in the period following the 2001 economic collapse.
4) Moreover, though piquetes are bothersome and cost productivity, it is notable that #Argentina has seen the election of a non-Peronist/non-Radical; a currency crisis; a recession; and #IMF-imposed austerity without even a hint of a governability challenge.
