1) This morning's @SenadoArgentina vote not to legalize abortion in #Argentina was a painful setback for women's rights campaigners. But it was arguably also a sign that the once unthinkable reform is now inevitable. The measure failed narrowly, 38-to-31 , after a 16-hour debate.
2) A year ago, most analysts wouldn't have given the bill a chance in this heavily Catholic country, led by a center-right president opposed to abortion rights. Yet @mauriciomacri encouraged the debate and on June 14, the bill passed @DiputadosAR on a 129-to-125 vote.
3) Meanwhile, #Argentina's women's rights campaign is on the march. Activists, including in the #NiUnaMenos
movement, have pushed issues such as domestic abuse and the gender wage gap onto the national agenda.
4) In fact, even progress on reproductive rights is more than symbolic, with the government now backing plans to decriminalize abortion. And a change in public opinion has attracted a prominent new ally, @CFKArgentina, who thwarted the pro-choice movement during her presidency.
