  1. stairs, stairs, stairs. I sleep and have a bathroom on the 5th deck, the gym is on 3rd, library on 4th, and meeting room is on 7th. I'm doing 20+ flights a day!

    We finally left port in Tromsø on the Russisn supply vessel . Even though, we will just hide in the next fjord waiting for calmer weather conditions before heading to , it feels like our adventure finally started!

    There could be worse places to wait for the third leg of to finally start off from . Some loading operations on still going on, but hopefully not too long until we head out to Barents Sea.

    Now Leg3 is finally off! This afternoon two tugboats pulled the out into the fjord and we began steaming (dieseling? doesn't have quite the same ring) North. bound!

    6 months worth of gear in 3 bags. The blue bag is actually all outdoors equipment for working safely on the sea ice. All of my personal effects fit in the pink bag.

    Last breakfast before boarding the Kapitan Dranitsyn! Norwegian breakfasts are excellent because there's usually smoked salmon.

    Tomorrow I board the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn for a two week transit to the RV Polarstern. So I treated myself to a nice meal. .

  13. Meanwhile near the North Pole... Ian Raphael has been hard at work to capture the weather and snow up in the Arctic! He's using a scanning ground laser to map snow accumulation and dune formation at 7 locations

  14. Update: the kids helped us install this weather station outside their classroom! We were AMAZED by all the awesome questions they had about Arctic weather and climate. Two more will be going in outside classrooms in Hanover, NH and Boulder, CO soon.

    Maddie Smith (), a postdoc researcher at UW (), has been to the Arctic and Antarctic, deploying buoys to study how waves move through and change the sea ice. Next summer she’ll be part of measuring melting sea ice.

  17. Here in Seattle, we’re setting up a weather station we’ll be installing at a local school on Friday, to do some outreach connected to MOSAiC! They’ll be able to compare in real time the weather from their station with that on

    For , we feature Melinda Webster, an assistant research professor at . She's currently packing for the expedition, where she will collect sea ice, ocean, and melt pond data to compare with surface elevation products.

  20. Also, how is heat in the WARMING Arctic Ocean melting sea ice - both in leads (📷 of Don Perovich measuring lead during SHEBA, 1997) and UNDER the ice. Looking forward to answering these questions - and more!
