Wow, January 2020 was the warmest on record and greater than 3°C above the 1981-2010 climate average in Europe. The average global temperature was also the highest on record. 🔥 More info ():

We use the time on board as effectively as possible. Nonetheless, we also enjoy some leisure time to relax. Cinema, sports & the sauna are popular activities. Engineer Torben likes to paint – although his thoughts are obviously not completely away from . 📸F. Mehrtens

My first Arctic field campaign was Feb-Apr 2012 in Utqiaġvik. I remember doing experiments outside at -40F/C (lower with wind chill)! Every field campaign since has been like Michigan winter with huge open water nearby (climate change!). Hoping it will stay cold for a while now!

For the first time on record, we had January when Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen were above freezing (0°C) every day of the month. In addition, all but Oslo were totally snow-free. Satellite image on 22 Jan 2020.

People in the majority group get to feel like they belong until someone says that they don’t. People in minoritized groups often feel like they don’t belong until someone says that they do.

Whenever a lead opens up in our floe, the ice does not simply disappear, but shows up in another place. The last days’ lead formation & subsequent closing resulted in the buildup of new ridges. As a consequence, our former trails might end up in a wall of ice.. 📸 Eric Brossier

Yesterday, we recognized subtle deformations of the floe in the vicinity of on the ship’s radar. A logistics team went out for scouting: a big lead 50 m wide & 1 km long had formed along a shear zone. A good chance to measure energy & gas fluxes! 📸 F. Mehrtens

This midnight visitor to the remote sensing site was not really trained to operate the SSM/I radiometer of . Fortunately, the bear just changed the elevation angle of the 37 GHz feedhorn and did no further damage. Image retrieved by M.Huntemann.
