The tilt of the concave hole makes it LOOK like there's pins sticking out of the middle, when really, the pins are, in fact, ON TOP (and on bottom, out of view). I bet they did it so they could capture the back of the phone as well as the pins. Much prettier and aesthetically pleasing to see color, a logo, and the camera vs a flat black screen!

That’s lightning and yes the pins stick out like that, it’s just that on an iPhone the pins are usually only at the bottom of the port, not the top. That’s why lightning has pins on both sides- To be reversible!
