How come he looks like he's speaking from a Stalinist bunker?

There's some legitimate criticisms of the the main branch design, but overall, it reflects a period when there was some ambition involved in civic architecture, and value engineering was no the name of the game. Maybe that's why he's confused.

It's a matter of taste. I don't care about the mayor (left Ottawa in 2009) but I worked in that building for years and it IS kind of a bunker and poorly set up (due to later modifications). It's very out of step with the way libraries have been designed in last few decades.

What a load of nonsense. Like any citizen I have every right to offer an opinion. I love how I see so many architectures spend so much time criticizing other architects yet when I offer an opinion you have a fit !

Well, Mayor Watson, I'm a critic and not an architect. You are a public official who has a responsibility to the city present and future. If you're going to commission "good design," you need to understand what that means.

Is there a term for politicians who build to appear effective and innovative - looking busy as civic duty.

CDN design history is so vulnerable to this - think of the brilliant ON logo lost, or the replacement of TO City Hall furniture w cheap knock offs...it goes on and on. These leaders are distorting the public into thinking design has little cultural meaning or value.
