Targeted ads seem to have at least displaced scams, for the most part. (Also I did once buy a piece of art from a targeted ad, so, shamefully, yes.)

Obviously I'd prefer no ads under most circumstances. I also get a lot of graphic violence/NSFW ads on non-western sites that I have used for work, which is revolting.

I wouldn't mind being shown targeted ads relevant to me, as long as they're not intrusive. The problem is the means of doing it: it requires you to be vulnerable to a third party, by giving them your data.
