We do need identity: the identity between your polling card (mailed to your address) and your entry in the electoral register.

Because it's an alternative to having to show one of the other kinds of identity credential (passport, etc.)

I must admit, I've never tried voting without a polling card. I usually have a go at them because the ballot is not secret.

lack of secrecy is an issue, I agree. Also postal vote. You can never know if vulnerable people are forced into voting 1 way
